PMMA (Acrylic / Plexiglas)

Plastics
PMMAAcrylicPlexiglasClear

Optically clear, weather-resistant transparent thermoplastic.

PMMA (Plexiglas, acrylic) is the clear plastic that holds up best to weather and sunlight. It is more optically pure than PC but considerably more brittle. Common for displays, optical components, and architectural panels.

Mechanical and physical properties

PropertyValue

Typical applications

  • Display cases and signage.
  • Optical lenses and light pipes.
  • Architectural panels and skylights.
  • Aquarium and tank windows.
PMMA vs PC

PMMA is clearer and weather-resistant; PC is impact-resistant. For exposed outdoor signage with no impact risk, PMMA. For machine guards or anything that may be hit, PC.

Specifying it on Uretyco

  1. 1
    Pick PMMA from the dropdown

Cast (better optics) or extruded (cheaper).

  2. 2
    Specify polish for cosmetic edges

Flame polish or diamond polish for clear edges.

  3. 3
    Plan for laser cutting

Cast PMMA produces clean, polished edges from laser.

  4. 4
    Avoid sharp corners under load

PMMA is brittle; relax internal radii in load-bearing geometry.
