Sustainability talk is everywhere. Sustainability practice is harder. As an on-demand manufacturing platform we sit in a privileged position to influence both customers' choices and suppliers' practices. This article is what we have learned about what actually moves the footprint of a custom part.
Where energy goes
Roughly 40-60 percent of a metal part's embodied energy is in the raw stock. The remaining 30-40 percent is in machining and finishing; transport rounds it out. Reducing material consumed at the design stage almost always beats process optimization downstream.
- Hollow what does not need to be solid.
- Choose stock sizes close to the finished part to minimize chip volume.
- Use additive when topology is naturally light-weight.
- Pick recycled or reclaimed alloys when feasible.
Waste streams that are easy to fix
| Stream | Typical reduction action |
|---|---|
| Metal chips | Compact, sort by alloy, sell back to recyclers |
| Coolant | Filtration extends life from weeks to years |
| Cardboard / packaging | Reusable bin programs with regular customers |
| Powder leftovers (MJF/SLS) | Recovery and refresh cycles, blend ratios |
| Tooling end of life | Resharpen carbide tools; re-grind drills |
How Uretyco vets partners on ESG
ESG is one of the criteria in our partner audit. We score on documented energy use, waste handling, certifications (ISO 14001 where applicable), and worker safety practices. The score is part of how we choose between suppliers when more than one can deliver a part.
Beware of suppliers who paint walls green without measuring their footprint. We ask for audited numbers — not slogans — and re-score quarterly.
Transport — picking realistic battles
International air freight is heavy. Where deadlines allow, sea or road shipping cuts transport CO2 by an order of magnitude. The platform exposes the comparison at quote time so customers can make the choice consciously.
What we are working on
We are building a per-part footprint estimate that ties into the quote. It will not replace formal life-cycle analysis, but it will give engineers a directional number while they design. Honest, scoped, comparable across processes.
