Magnesium AZ31B

Metals
MagnesiumAZ31BLightweightAerospace

The most-used wrought magnesium alloy — lighter than aluminum, with reasonable strength and machinability.

AZ31B is the most common wrought magnesium alloy. With a density of 1.77 g/cm³, it is the lightest structural metal in routine production use. It machines well with sharp tools, but requires careful chip handling — magnesium chips are flammable.
