AZ31B is the most common wrought magnesium alloy. With a density of 1.77 g/cm³, it is the lightest structural metal in routine production use. It machines well with sharp tools, but requires careful chip handling — magnesium chips are flammable.
Mechanical and physical properties
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength | 260 MPa |
| Yield strength | 200 MPa |
| Elongation at break | 15% |
| Density | 1.77 g/cm³ |
| Modulus | 45 GPa |
| Machinability rating | Excellent |
Fire safety
Fine magnesium chips can ignite. Suppliers run dedicated machines with flood coolant and chip extraction. Specify magnesium up-front so the right equipment is allocated.
Typical applications
- Aerospace and motorsport housings.
- Hand-held electronics shells.
